Our end of the year Pizza Factory party will be on April 22 at 6:30pm. If we get at least 30 people it will be $5. If we have less than 30 people, each person must pay $7.50. It's a great deal. Come and have fun and sign.

Benefit Concert

Last night, March 26th, we held a benefit concert at Provo High for a school in Iraq to help raise money for their arts programs. Katie Jenkins, an ASL student met Mrs. Ghazawi at a HOBY leadership conference in DC. Currently students are only able to study the core subjects. Without extra curricular types of subjects, many students feel discouraged without other means of expressing their talents and developing new skills. People were generous and we will continue to raise funds in the next couple of weeks. If you are interested in donating, please contact me and I can direct you. American Sign Language students interpreted a choir song.

Counter-Intell Simulaion

We just finished our three week Counter-Intell Simulation. Students are broken up in teams with assigned roles: Media Representative, General, Peace Keeping Leader, Financial Consultant, and CIA Agent. Here are pictures of some of their operations. Freedom Fighters had assigned roles as well: Logistics, Ideology, and Central Command.

Signing at Elementary Schools and Rest Homes

Our Christmas Signing Choir tour was super fun this year. We were invited to the Provo School District Office, Wasatch Elementary, Timpanogos Elementary, and Amelia Earhart Elementary schools as well as Country View Manor and Trinity Mission Rest Homes.

Elementary students joined us for one of the numbers. We taught them enough signs to follow along, and students broke out into clapping and laughing throughout the songs.

A special thanks to Shea Jeffs who directed the choir and arranged all the schools. Chelsea Wall was her assistant. Tori Hill helped at lunches. Natalie Young who helped arrange the signs for Christmas Shoes. And thanks to all the diligent practicing from the Signing Choir itself. Well done.

Pizza Factory

We went to Pizza Factory for our end of year club celebration. Over 40 people showed up. Thanks to Mike Brown who came at the end of the night to tell us some Deaf jokes.

We set up a booth for the middle school students to see what classes are available for next year. It looks like quite a few people visited. Thanks to the students who helped with the setup and advertised.

We were honored to host Julie Erickson, a math teacher from Wyoming, who came to visit our ASL classes on Monday Feb 2. We wish her luck and success in her ASL program and hope to work with her in the future.

Dr. Bezzant Praises Provo High ASL Program

Mark Bezzant, the Assistant Vice President at Utah Valley University, visited a Provo High School American Sign Language class to express his desire that all ASL programs across the country be as excellent Provo High School’s. Bezzant said the Provo ASL students can be streamlined right into college-level courses and pick up right where they left off in Provo High. The education given them at Provo makes it easy for them to succeed and progress, he said. "This school and class provides a quality of ASL instruction that is a model to the rest of the nation," Bezzant said.

Provo High School offers four levels of ASL instruction, including receiving some college-level instruction when reaching the fourth level. Audrey Bastian, the ASL teacher at Provo High, said her students work extremely hard to master the vocabulary and is thrilled they can continue their ASL instruction at higher levels. "I’m really excited that UVU wants these students and is willing to take them even further in their ASL," she said. "It is a great opportunity for them to continue studying a skill that is in such high demand."

We went to Silent Weekend on Friday and Saturday at Camp Kostopulos in Emigration Canyon. So much fun. We got some rain but we were laughing and playing games and goofing off the whole time. Here are some pics from the trip.

Welcome to my class

For those of you returning to my class, I am looking forward to seeing you again. For those of you who may not know me, let me introduce myself.

This is my fifth year at Provo High. I teach American Sign Language and Arabic. I have been a professional interpreter between ASL and English for five and a half years. I love learning and speaking languages. Besides ASL and Arabic, I can speak Mandarin and have dabbled in several other languages such as Japanese, Spanish, and Hebrew. I have a masters degree in International Law and World Order from the University of Reading in Britain and thoroughly enjoy learning new things about people and places. I am excited to get started on this adventure with you.

My favorite cartoon character is Jane from the Disney movie Tarzan because she loves learning new things, adventures, and teaching a new language (to Tarzan). When you get to class, take a look around to see if you can find my monkeys. (Remember, they are the ones who stole my boots in the movie.)
